We’re keen to make sure that you get the most out of your Illuminapp product.

Common Questions

What is Illuminapp?

Illuminapp is a patent-pending illuminated frame technology. Controlled via an app on your iOS or Android device, you can alter the colour of light to match any mood or atmosphere. Illuminapp is built around the Zigbee Light Link (ZLL) standard which allows interoperable communication between other Zigbee lighting and control products. This means that Illuminapp is compatible with Philips Hue systems. Products using this standard will let consumers change lighting remotely to reflect ambience, task or season, all while managing energy use and making their homes greener.

What artwork do you offer?

A variety of different images suit Illuminapp, including posters, photographs or artwork. We have a variety of frame and other choices including the removal of glass. This means that you can get a bespoke Illuminapp quote from our quotes page.

Please note- whilst we are able to frame any piece of artwork which can be supplied to us in a variety of ways, there is a maximum theoretical size limit for our Illuminapp frames.

What frame sizes do you offer?

We currently offer the following frame sizes:

{INSERT FRAME SIZES HERE}

However, we’re more than happy to make a bespoke frame size to match the piece of artwork you wish to frame, please contact us for a quote.

Currently, we do not recommend pieces larger than {XX”} dimensions.

Will Illuminapp damage my artwork?

No! The Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are of high quality so are generally very safe for artwork.

However, the LEDs do emit a very small amount of UV (ultraviolet) light, but the effects of this would only start showing up after hundreds of years. LEDs have phosphors within them that convert the Ultraviolet light to white light. In fact, 10% of sunlight is UV so any damage to your artwork would be caused by ambient light, not the Illuminapp design.

If you do have any concerns with regards to safety, please feel free to contact us.

Technical Questions

What do I need to get started?

Since Illuminapp is based on Zigbee Light Link (ZLL), you will need a compatible smart bridge or gateway. We recommend the Philips Hue Smart Bridge which can be easily configured.

Most smart bridges connect directly to your router via an Ethernet cable, so you’ll need to make sure you have a free port available.

We recommend the Philips Hue Smart Bridge for use with our Illuminapp products. This is because we have extensively tested this hub with Illuminapp. However, please acknowledge that there are many other alternatives which are also compatible, such as the Lightify Gateway and Samsung SmartThings Hub.

Why do I need a Philips Hue (or similar) Smart Bridge?

The smart bridge (hub) is the heart of your home automation setup. It may seem unnecessary at first, but the hub is required for even the most basic setups. Think of it as ‘the brain’ of your smart home.

The hub has several functions which are often overlooked in a home automation setup. Let’s go through them:

  • Internet Connectivity – The hub allows your Illuminapp (and other Zigbee compatible lights) to communicate with the wider world via an internet connection. This means that you can, with the Philips Hue app, turn your lights on/off when you’re not at home. So if you’re at work and realise you’ve forgotten to turn your Illuminapp off, you can do so in the app. On a side note, your hub is given the job of keeping your Illuminapp and other smart lights software up to date.
  • Light Synchrony – Do you have more than one Illuminapp or Zigbee based bulbs? It’s your hubs job to keep them all in sync. That means that when you make changes to a group of lights, all respond at the same time. The Philips Hue Smart Bridge supports up to 50 connected lights.
  • Create Timers and Routines – Make your Illuminapp light up when you arrive home or every morning to wake you up. It’s totally up to you.
  • Use Dimmers and Motion Sensors – The smart hub allows you to make use of dimmer switches or motion sensors to control multiple lights without your mobile phone. More integrations are also possible, see our integrations page.

Is Illuminapp manufactured by Philips?

No. Philips is not affiliated with the maker of this product and does not endorse this product in any way.

We also do not use any of the Philips Hue lighting range in any of our products. Instead, we use our own LED lighting technologies which are tailor-made for this application.

We do however recommend the Philips Hue Smart Bridge for use with our Illuminapp products. This is because we have extensively tested this hub with Illuminapp. However, please acknowledge that there are many other alternatives which are also compatible, such as the Lightify Gateway and Samsung SmartThings Hub.

Does Illuminapp require Amazon Echo or Google Home to function?

No. Your Illuminapp connects directly to your Philips Hue Smart Bridge and you can use your Android or iOS device to control the lights.

It is important to note that a hub or equivalent smart bridge is essential and Illuminapp will not function without it.

What can I say to Alexa or Google Home to activate my lights?

Try These:

‘Alexa, turn on [your picture name]

‘Alexa, set the brightness of [your picture name] to [a number between 1 and 100]

‘Alexa, set [your picture name] to [any colour, e.g. red, green, blue]

*Please note that if you’ve changed your Echo wake word, you’ll need to use your defined wake word.

The commands for Google Home are similar, just replace the word ‘Alexa’ with ‘Hey, Google’.

How do I perform a factory reset?

If you’re changing the hub which your Illuminapp is connected to, you should remove the light from the settings page of the Philips Hue app. If you forget to do this, disconnect your Illuminapp and reconnect a total of four times, ensuring that the lights come on for more than 2 seconds between each cycle. The LED’s will flash to inform you that the reset procedure is about to start. Once they have stopped flashing, disconnect and reconnect your Illuminapp a further two times in the same fashion. The LED’s will flash again to indicate the factory reset has been completed. Refer to the diagram below.
